Photography students are tomorrow’s professionals. Alongside the Amateur and Professional competitions, the Sony World Photography Awards launched an international student program and competition, incorporating universities from around the world.

This global initiative which combines competitions, lectures, master classes and prizes awarded to the best photography students and universities, is one of the fundamental principals of the World Photography Awards organization.

The 2008 University program, welcomed students from ten universities across Europe - Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and UK - who all competed in Cannes for the grand prize of over 45,000 Euros worth of state of the art photography equipment for their university, courtesy of headline sponsor Sony.  After a diverse schedule of activities from photography assignments to master classes, Oriol Llados and Salvi Danés from Institut D’Estudis Fotografics de Catalunya have won the coveted prize.

Along with the winner a few talented students received special commendations from the judges and also from the city of Cannes.

“It was an experience for me to participate in an initiative like this. It is a good launching pad for young photographers like me. I am proud to have formed part in the first edition of these awards I have won so far in a final where they appreciated our ability in so little time and space. I hope this is just the beginning...” Salvi Danes www.salvidanes.com
